A digital product passport QR code is an ordinary QR code whose content is a web address. The address identifies one product, usually by its GTIN plus a batch and a serial number, and opening it shows the passport. For batteries the European Commission says the passport is linked to the battery through a QR code, and the obligation applies from 18 February 2027 (Commission page on the battery passport).

That sentence is the whole job. The QR code is small; what makes it a passport is what the address resolves to and whether every item gets its own.

Only need the QR image? The free GS1 Digital Link generator builds the link and the QR code from a GTIN, lot and serial. Nothing is uploaded.

What is inside the QR code

The content is a GS1 Digital Link: a URL where the product identifiers are path segments, defined in ISO/IEC 18975. This is the link in the label above.

Part of the linkIn the sampleWhat it does
Domain and publisherlabelinn.com/dl/aurelia-cellsWhere the scan goes. The publisher handle is your permanent address on the resolver and is printed on every label
GTIN (01)/01/09506000134352The product type, from GS1. 14 digits with the check digit last
Batch or lot (10)/10/L2704Which production lot
Serial (21)/21/B000047Which single item. This is what gives every battery its own passport

Keep the whole link short. Every extra character adds modules to the code, and a shorter code can be printed larger on the same label, which is what scanners and rough handling reward.

What a scan opens

The address answers differently depending on who asks. A phone browser gets the passport page. Software that asks for JSON-LD gets the same data as structured fields, from the same address, so a recycler or a market-surveillance tool does not scrape a web page.

The page shows only public fields. Four battery fields that the regulation places above the public tier (critical raw materials, state of health, supply-chain due diligence and dismantling safety information) are kept off the public page and out of the JSON-LD even if someone marks them public. That rule runs on the server, not in the label designer.

03 / PASSPORT PAGE

Print it from the label designer

01

Add a GS1 barcode and switch the passport on. The passport switch sits at the top of the barcode panel. With it on, the barcode encodes the Digital Link instead of an element string.

02

Choose QR code as the carrier. The panel offers Data Matrix and QR code for the same link, and tells you that the EU Battery Regulation specifies a QR code for battery passports.

03

Bind the identity. GTIN, plus batch if you track lots, each from a fixed value, an Excel or CSV column, or an API. A per-item serial is added automatically, so no two items share a code.

04

Print. When the labels print, LabelInn registers one passport per item alongside the print. Registration never blocks or changes the print, and a reprint of the same serial updates the passport instead of creating a second one.

Size, quality and the check we ran

At the same module size, this link needs a 37 by 37 QR code (medium error correction, 41 by 41 with the quiet zone) against a 32 by 32 Data Matrix, about a third more area. On a 203 dpi printer at 3 dots per module the QR code including its quiet zone is 15.4 mm square. Every current phone camera app opens a QR code.

We drew the QR code above with the same engine the app prints with, rendered the label to an image, and decoded the image with an independent decoder (ZXing). It returned the link, character for character. That proves the code encodes correctly. It does not replace scanning a printed label with your own scanners and phones, which you should do before a batch.

Where it stops

  • The registry entry belongs to the operator. The Commission's registry keeps only the passport's identifier and where it is hosted; the full data stays with the economic operator or a service provider it designates (the Commission's registry page). Only a verified economic operator can register, and enrolling means its legal representative signs a declaration with a qualified electronic signature (the registry user guide). LabelInn hosts the passport and gives you the identifier; it does not enrol or register on your behalf.
  • No GTINs. They come from GS1 in your country.
  • Not legal advice or certification. LabelInn checks that required fields are filled in. You remain responsible for the content and for meeting the regulation.

ANY PRINTER

Design it, bind your data, print on the printer you already own.

QUESTIONS / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does a digital product passport QR code contain?

A web address, normally a GS1 Digital Link, that identifies one product by its GTIN and usually a batch and a serial number. The passport data is not inside the code; the code points to it.

Is a QR code required for a digital product passport?

For batteries, yes in practice: the European Commission says the battery passport is linked to the battery through a QR code, from 18 February 2027. Other product groups are set by their own delegated acts, and the Ecodesign Regulation defines a data carrier broadly, so check the act for your product.

Can one QR code serve the passport, the warehouse and the shopper?

A GS1 Digital Link carries the GTIN, batch and serial in its path, so a scanner or middleware that parses Digital Links can read them without opening a page, and a phone opens the passport. Whether your warehouse system parses them is something to test.

Does LabelInn print DPP QR codes?

Yes. The passport option in the barcode panel can carry the Digital Link as a QR code or a Data Matrix, with a per-item serial and registration at print time. The free generator makes a single QR code from a link.

Does LabelInn submit passports to the EU registry?

No. The registry holds only the identifier and the hosting address, and only a verified economic operator can register it, after its legal representative signs an enrolment declaration. LabelInn hosts the passport and provides the identifier that you register.

What does a scan show to the public?

Only the fields marked public. Fields that the regulation places in restricted tiers stay off the public page and the JSON-LD.
