Pharmacy and laboratory labels are small, dense and consequential. A dispensing label carries dosage instructions someone will follow literally; a sample label carries an identity that must survive a freezer, a centrifuge and a chain of custody.

Small surfaces, dense data
A 5 ml vial has very little printable area. Data Matrix encodes far more than a linear barcode in a small square and tolerates the curvature of a vial, which is why it dominates in labs. Around 140 symbologies are available, including GS1 Data Matrix for regulated pharmaceutical use.
Identity that cannot collide
Sample and batch IDs are allocated server-side. Two benches printing simultaneously receive distinct values, and a crash mid-run does not reset the sequence — the failure mode that quietly produces duplicate sample IDs.
Chain of custody
Every label writes a hash-chained, HMAC-signed audit entry: the data, the template version, the operator, the printer and the time. Reprints come from that record, so a replacement label is identical to the original rather than a reconstruction.
Choosing stock for the environment
- Cryogenic storage — cryo-rated adhesive; standard stock lifts at −80 °C
- Autoclave — resin ribbon on polyester survives the cycle; direct thermal blackens
- Solvent exposure — resin ribbon resists alcohol and xylene smearing
- Dispensing labels — direct thermal is fine; they are short-lived and handled dry
